The Power of Coach-to-Coach Connections

Cultivating a network of peers and mentors to improve your coaching

I used to focus almost exclusively on my players and their development. But over time, I've learned that as coaches we often overlook one of our most valuable resources for growth: other coaches. While formal training provides essential foundations, some of our most meaningful learning opportunities come from connections with fellow coaches who share our passion for the game.

Why Connect with Other Coaches?

Every coach brings their own experiences, approaches, and insights to the table. Peer relationships often lead to new knowledge and innovations and can help us avoid common pitfalls that others have already navigated. When we tap into this collective wisdom, we can accelerate our growth as coaches and bring fresh ideas to our teams.

Building Your Network

Every coaching journey needs both structure and spontaneity. I've found immense value in formal connections through coaching associations and workshops, but some of my most meaningful relationships have developed through less structured channels like local meetups and social networks.

What makes these informal connections so powerful is how they naturally create opportunities to both teach and learn. As you expand your network, you'll find yourself moving fluidly between being a mentor and a mentee – sometimes even in the same conversation. This dynamic keeps our coaching perspective fresh and helps us grow in unexpected ways.

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Helen Keller

Technology has opened up new possibilities for these connections. For instance, I've been experimenting with an innovative approach to knowledge sharing with a fellow coach in Spain. We exchange three- to four-minute audio messages over WhatsApp, which allows us to have meaningful conversations despite being in different time zones. This asynchronous format has led to some fascinating exchanges – we can take time to reflect on each other's ideas before responding, creating deeper, more thoughtful discussions than we might have in a typical real-time conversation.

Making Connections Count

The quality of your coaching network matters more than its size. Don't wait for the perfect moment – start small but start today. When we're open about both our successes and challenges, we create opportunities for authentic connections and deeper learning.

Quick Ways to Start Building Your Network Today

  • Reach out to a coach whose team played well against yours

  • Join a coaching-focused group on LinkedIn or Facebook

  • Start a monthly coffee meetup with local coaches

  • Share a training session plan with another coach

  • Ask to observe another team's practice

  • Create a WhatsApp group for coaches in your league

  • Attend a coaching clinic and make it a point to meet three new people

“Only connect!”

Every connection we make helps create a stronger, more supportive coaching community.
